Suddenly Homeless

‘Gwen’ found herself suddenly homeless when her boyfriend died unexpectedly from an aneurysm.

Dealing with the shock of such a sudden loss, ‘Gwen’ was told she would have to vacate her home.  Even though she’d been staying with her boyfriend, her name wasn’t on the lease.

‘Gwen’ quickly packed her belongings into a storage unit.  She then started ‘couch surfing’ with nowhere permanent to go–all the while trying to manage her HIV and stay healthy.

‘Gwen’ looked to AVOL for help.

Thanks to AVOL’s housing program, ‘Gwen’ was eligible to enroll in tenant-based rental assistance (TBRA).  The TBRA program allows ‘Gwen’ to have safe, stable housing in her own apartment while she gets on her feet and saves money.  If all goes as planned, at the end of the program, ‘Gwen’ will be able to keep her apartment and maintain it on her own.

‘Gwen’, who sometimes volunteers for God’s Pantry, told AVOL she was most looking forward to having a kitchen again where she could cook some “good southern food”.

AVOL wouldn’t have been able to help ‘Gwen’ without the support we receive from you.
